Stephen began practicing with the predecessor to SSBP in 1969. Stephen spent his first two years working on litigation matters involving probate and real estate issues. In the mid-1970s, while still working in the real estate area, Stephen began to prepare and probate wills for clients that ultimately evolved into an estate planning and probate practice. In 1975, Stephen became a partner and in 1977 he was part of the first group of lawyers in Texas to be board certified in Estate Planning and Probate by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. During 1979-1985, Stephen worked with several Texas State Representatives to help draft and secure passage of state legislation related to the extension and amendment of private deed restrictions, now codified in the Texas Property Code.
In the 1990s, Stephen participated in the Houston Bar Association Real Property Section ad hoc committee to review proposed zoning for the City of Houston. In 1995-1996, Stephen was a member of the Committee on Lawyers’ Opinion Letters in Mortgage Loan Transactions formed by the Council of the Real Estate, Probate and Trust Law Section of the State Bar of Texas which published the 1996 Texas Supplement Regarding Lawyers’ Opinion Letters in Mortgage Loan Transactions.
Stephen has over 45 years of experience helping a wide range of clients, including businesses, business owners, entrepreneurs, professionals, real estate developers, buyers, sellers, individuals and families with their real estate, probate and estate planning needs.
